“That difficulties similar to those which finally prompted the opening of this canal were of early origin, is shown by the following note in the town records of Southampton, which is entered under date of August 18, 1652: "It was concluded by the voat of the Generall Court that there shall bee yet another attempt made for the letting out of Shinnecock water, for the regaining of the salt marsh meddow." 2
